Project TwoTorr Vale Mill- Bird Observatory

One of twenty-eight mills built in New Mills, Torr Vale Mill was built in 1783 and was used as a cotton mill during Britain’s’ industrial revolution. It served as the country’s longest textile mill, functioning for 210 years and its doors finally closed in December 2000. Now a Grade II Listed building, I propose that Torr Vale Mill should be used for a Bird Observatory. Surrounded by the River Goyt and Sett, Torr Vale Mill has a very rich natural surrounding with plenty of wildlife including a selection of local birds. My design includes observatory spaces where visitors are to experience the mill as well as surrounding nature, and are able to get a clear view over the Rivers and towards the Millennium walkway. Bird safe ornilux glass prevents birds from flying into the large light interventions and enables users to enjoy the new use of Torr Vale Mill.
